Kenya: Aberdares

Park Overview

The Aberdares mountain range is situated about 100 miles north of Nairobi. Part of the range is protected in Aberdare National Park, which covers all land over 10,500 feet. The National Park is a great place to hike, but keep in mind that crossing theses mountains is an unpredictable event since rain is both frequent and heavy. The highest point of the range is Ol Doinyo Satima, which reaches 13,113 feet. Icy rivers surge downhill in cascades and massive waterfalls are ever present. Helping to support this magnificent river system is a densely vegetated alpine forest, rich in wildlife. Elephant and rhino, warthog, bush pig, water buck, duiker, suni, dikdik, bongo and reedbuck are all to be seen. In the canopy the black and white colobus monkey performs its aerial acrobatics and Sykes' monkey and the black faced vervet are also present. Lion can be seen, though usually more hairy and spotted than its plains counterpart. Birdlife is also quite abundant. The crowned eagle (which eats monkeys) is everywhere as well as the silver checked hornbill. The park itself is under-visited despite its size and its powerful vistas. This works well for visitors wanting to get away from crowds.

Treetops

Treetops camp was Kenya's first "treehouse game lookout" and captured the world's headlines in 1952 when a young girl climbed up one day as a Princess and down the next as a Queen - Queen Elizabeth II. Set high on stilts, the hotel overlooks a floodlit glade with an eventful waterhole and salt lick frequented by elephant, buffalo, rhino, giant forest hog and other animals. The fifty twin bedded rooms are neat and cozy, like cabins on board a huge ship. Dinner is imaginatively served at refectory tables with bench seating. The emphasis is on making as little noise as possible so as not scare away the animals.

Abadare Country Club

The Aberdare Country Club nestles on the slopes of Mweiga Hill. All rooms and cottages have spectacular views of the plains below, the Aberdare Mountains to the west, and Mount Kenya to the east. The Club has an enviable reputation for hospitality and excellent cuisine. The 1,300 acre wildlife sanctuary abounds with Thompson and Grant's Gazelle, Zebra, Giraffe and the more reclusive leopard. Activities include safari walks through this unspoiled paradise, game drives in Mount Kenya National Park, Solio Ranch, Sweetwaters and the Salient within the Aberdare National Park, bush meals, fishing or just relax by the pool or in the beautiful gardens.

Sangare Lakeside Cottages

Sangare Safari Camp is quite simply one of the most beautiful private farms in Kenya, a 6,500 acre property at an altitude of 6,000 feet in the foothills of the Aberdare Mountains. Ideally located to enjoy views of Mt. Kenya, rolling meadows, wooded ravines, dense bush and crystal clear streams. Guest accommodation consists of six en-suite tented units and an attractive cedar wood cottage for the lounge and dining area. The camp overlooks a small lake and is encircled by Acacia trees where Elephant and Buffalo are regular visitors.

Mt Kenya Safari Club

Mount Kenya Safari Club is situated on the lower slopes of Mt. Kenya at Nanyuki, and is placed exactly on the equator. With magnificent views of majestic Mt. Kenya, the Safari Club offers a unique blend of comfort, relaxation and adventure. Originally the exclusive retreat for the Club founder, William Holden and other famous adventurers including Winston Churchill and Bing Crosby. Set in over 100 acres of landscaped gardens, the Club recreates the mood of quiet elegance for a new generation of guests. With a total of 115 ensuite rooms, each room has a log fireplace and is furnished with rugs, bedside lamps, dressing tables and built in wardrobes. The fireplace is lit every evening as part of the turn-down service while you are enjoying dinner.

Sweetwaters

Located in the heart of Ol' Pejeta, which is a private 5,000 acre rhino reserve. Located in savannah grasslands, interrupted by the Whistling Thorn shrubs and Acacia Trees, Sweetwaters is truly an oasis. Children and adults alike will enjoy the chance to meet "Morani" © the tame orphaned baby rhino who has been saved and lives at the reserve. Also unique to this sanctuary are night game drives by spotlight, camel and horse riding and a leopard hide with nature walks. Accommodations are in luxury twin bedded tents with ensuite facilities which provide a comfortable retreat from the rigors of a hard day's wildlife viewing.

Ark Forest Lodge

The Ark is built like the upswept bows of the biblical sanctuary for animals, and is Kenya's ship of the forest which carries seventy-nine human passengers (two by two, or singly) whilst the animals of the forest remain outside! It overlooks a floodlit glade with an eventful waterhole and salt lick frequented by elephant, buffalo, rhino, giant forest hog and other animals. Ideal for nature lovers and for photographers, the Ark features two viewing galleries, an open deck and a ground level bunker. At night spotlights illuminate the nocturnal activity and each room has a special buzzer to summon guests when an especially interesting species makes an appearance. Guests are requested to bring along only an overnight back and to store the balance of their luggage at the Aberdare Country Club, where it will be collected upon departure from the Ark.
