Kenya: Tsavo West

Park Overview

Tsavo West National Park is hilly, greener and more vegetated than Tsavo East National Park and is considered a massive wildlife and environmental-enthusiast hot spot. The land is divided by the Nairobi - Mombasa road and by the railway into the park, which contains a variety of habitat, geological/soil types, animals, birds and plants. Dozens of mammals graze, browse, hunt and scavenge in the grasslands and bush country and its surrounding areas. Zebras are often seen quenching their thirst near Tsavo West's luxurious game lodges. Among the more unusual of the animals are the gerenuk, a long necked antelope that browses on the higher, sweeter leaves of the acacia thorns. Few carnivores are abundant in the park itself. The most famous of Tsavo West's sites is Mzima Springs, where rainfall collected in the volcanic rocks gushes into a pool with large groups of crocodiles and hippos.
