Park Overview

Long stretches of sandy beaches, boating, windsurfing, scuba diving, and snorkeling are all pleasures to be found at Lake Malawi. Nyika National Park in northern Malawi is on a beautiful plateau at 6500ft. The park allows walking safaris and animals are easily spotted in the open grassland. Kasumgu National Park is Malawi's largest park where a wide range of wildlife can be found, however, Liwonde National Park is the best in Malawi. Including part of Lake Malombe, the Shire River and the Upper Shire Plain, this area is home to thousands of hippo, crocodile, elephant, antelope and an array of birdlife. The Zomba Plateau overlooks the town of Zomba and is a beautiful area with waterfalls, small lakes and streams, forest and woodland. The plateau sits on top of an escarpment reaching over a thousand meters high. Mt. Mulanje whose local name is "The Island in the Sky" is easily accessible and suitable for the climber or non-climber.

Ku Chawe

The Ku Chawe Inn is attractive and comfortable, reminiscent of an alpine ski lodge. Surrounded by terraces of landscaped gardens, this magnificent hotel is located at the edge of Zomba Plateau. From here, guests enjoy some of the most awe-inspiring views of Malawi. Capital Hotel

Cradled in the magnificent parkland close to Lilongwe's Capital Hill and a short distance from the airport, this hotel is perfect for both the tourist and businessman. The rooms overlook the swimming pool and tropical gardens. Every tastefully decorated room has air-conditioning, satellite television, and a telephone and radio. En-suite bathroom facilities are very amenable. There is also a putting green where guests can get some practice in before they tee off on the eighteen-hole golf course nearby.

 

Club Makokola

Located on the shore of Lake Malawi, this thatched cottage hotel offers a wonderful hideaway with its beachfront setting amongst exotic trees and shrubs. Guests can enjoy fine food and drink in the separate dining room, lounge, bar, picturesque beach bar, cocktail bar and coffee bar. Activities include tennis, swimming, squash, table tennis, volleyball and fishing. Of particular interest are the water sports which include sailing, snorkeling, waterskiing, as well as the use of the paddle craft, canoes and pedallos.

 

Nkopola

The lodge is surrounded by abundant tropical vegetation on one side and the freshwater glory of Lake Malawi on the other. Situated just a short drive from Mangochi on the southern lakeshore, this popular resort offers supreme comfort and tranquility in exquisite surroundings. Guests can opt for hillside rooms commanding spectacular views of the lake, which is just a few feet away from their room. There are also beachside rooms with their own private lawned patios and sun loungers on the waters edge. You alos have the choice to stay in one of the modern chalets, surrounded by landscaped gardens. All bathroom accommodation at Nkopola is en-suite.

 

Livinstonia Beach

Shaded by towering acacia trees, this little resort hotel lies in a splendid situation on the quiet shores of Lake Malawi. Here the sparkling waters offer sailing and excellent snorkeling, wind-surfing, canoeing and water skiing, or, you can enjoy the hotel swimming pool and tennis The huge cormorant colony on nearby Namaenje Island can be visited, you can explore the lake shore on foot or by bicycle, drive or walk to the inland hippo pools, buy traditional carvings at the Mua Mission, or at the tropical fish farm close by, admire the magnificent freshwater fish that abound in the lake There are nineteen main building rooms and suites, with private bath and shower, eight thatch -roof cottages with private patio bar and restaurant.

 

Mvuu

Located along the banks of the Shire River within Liwonde National Park, Mvuu Wilderness Lodge offers exclusive, luxury accommodation at either the Wilderness Lodge or at the Mvuu Camp. The Lodge consists of four spacious tents, each with a private veranda raised over the lagoon, ensuring prime and discreet game viewing opportunities, and a separate dining room, bar and lounge area. Mvuu Camp is a twenty-six bedded camp with accommodation in spacious twin bedded safari tents overlooking the Shire river. Here guests have the choice of self-catering facilities or dining at the superb open-air riverside restaurant and bar. For those who prefer to camp, the campground offers prime sites with views across the Shire River. Game activities on offer include morning, afternoon and evening game drives in open vehicles, bush walks and river safaris conducted by experienced guides.

 

Chelinda

Chelinda Lodge and Chelinda Camp are situated in the centre of the park at 2100m. The lodge has an incredible panoramic view across the rolling hills whilst the camp overlooks a troutstocked dam. This new sixteen bed lodge opened in April 2000. Built entirely of timber, logs and stone in a traditional log cabin style it has one of the best views in Africa. Eight individual log cabins with a central dining area. Each cabin has two floors. The first floor has an open plan bedroom and lounge with an ensuite bathroom (shower and bath). Guests can relax on their queen sized beds or wing back chairs in front of an open log fire. A front door leads on to a small verandah. Upstairs there is a further living area including a writing desk underneath the front windows. All the cabins are connected by wooden walkways and are beautifully landscaped on the hillside. The main building has a large dining room, a comfortable lounge, reception area and curio shop.

 

Chintheche

The inn lies on the northern shores of Lake Malawi. It is remote but certainly accessible and offers warm hospitality and comfortable accommodation in one of the most pristine settings in Southern Africa. It accommodates twenty guests in comfortable bungalows. Chintheche offers the complete Lake Malawi experience with hundreds of metres of pristine white sandy beaches, great snorkelling and birdwatching. Ten en-suite bedrooms plus limited family rooms make for a beautiful, well catered stay. The Inn offers a fascinating contrast to the rest of your safari. Besides the beach and the water sport activities, guests can visit the traditional villages and learn about and enjoy rural African culture, traditions and village life.
