South Africa: Namaqualand

Park Overview

The Richtersveld, or Namaqualand as it is more widely known, is one of the least explored regions in South Africa. Those who travel here find a surprisingly diverse world. Overall, the area is sun-soaked and is considered a relatively barren desert-like environment. Impressive rock formations, a profusion of succulents and profound silence fills the mountain desert. Many of the species here, the gnarled "Quiver Tree", or quaint " halfmensboom" (half-person tree) for example, are endemic to the region. A dramatic change occurs in spring when a short rainy season enables the countless wildflowers to spread out over the plains. The spectacular wealth of blossoms can be best admired from August to October. Then visitors can phone the regional and national "Flower Hotlines" to inquire about quality, size and position of the flower fields.

Traditionally it was believed that this area was only accessible via four wheel drive. Though some areas are the avid off-roader’s dream, anyone can explore the Park by foot or bike. In many areas where access had been restricted due to diamond mining, visitors can now roam free.
