Tanzania: Ruaha National Park

Park Overview

Ruaha is one of Southern Tanzania's most isolated and least accessible parks. As a result, it has only a few safari camps and remains as one of the most untamed and least traveled game reserves in Africa. Ruaha is a birdwatcher's paradise, as there are 350 species of bird that are not found in Northern Tanzania. The rivers run through spectacular gorges and thick forests. Ruaha is, therefore, especially appealing to photographers. Walking safaris, and game viewing from vehicles (4 wheel drive) are also quite popular, and a great way to travel deep into the park. Game includes: elephant, buffalo, hippo, crocodile, lion, cheetah, leopard, wild dog and antelope.

Ruaha River Lodge

The Ruaha River Lodge is constructed on and around a rocky kopje overlooking the Great Ruaha River and provides comfortable accommodation and good food while blending into its surroundings to enable visitors to feel themselves a part of the wild. An interesting point to note is that archaeologists have discover evidence of Stone Age habitation in and around the Lodge site. Both the dining bandas and bars, in elevated positions above the river, combine comfort and coolness together with the most panoramic views. Guests are housed in individual bandas built from local stone and thatch. The river side bandas offer a nice view of the river, all with their own verandah. En-suite bathrooms and electric lightning in the evening are also provided.

Mwagusi

Mwagusi Camp is situated on the banks of Mwagusi Sand River. It is a small "old style" sixteen bed safari camp, run by Chris Fox and his enthusiastic team of staff. Tents are enclosed within thatched bandas in keeping with traditional African style each with "en suite" bathroom and hot showers. Experience quality wildlife viewing without the disturbance of other vehicles from the seclusion of your veranda or walking, accompanied by an armed ranger and an experienced guide. Over 480 species of bird and eighty species of animal can be found in the surrounding areas. Lion, cheetah, Kudu, Sable, and Roan antelope are the most common and most visible species in the area.
