Tanzania: Tarangire National Park

Park Overview

This national park is located 75 miles from Arusha (south east of Manyara). Tarangire has a particularly dense wildlife population between June and October. This area is home to thousands of elephant, and in the dry season game congregates along the river after their long migration from the Masai Mara. Tarangire is symbolized by the Baobab tree, which grows in open acacia woodland. Bird enthusiasts have plenty to discover, as the area is rich with birds of prey. Bird watching, photography and walking safaris are at their peak during October through May. Visitors have a spectrum of game to choose from. Antelope, eland, lesser kudu, Kongoni, impala, zebra, gazelles, buffalo, wildebeest, leopard, elephant, and rhino comprise the main game attractions.

Oliver's Camp

Oliver's Camp is situated on the border to Tarangire National Park, about a two hour drive from the parks main gate. The design has been kept as environmentally friendly as possible and the tents have been sited amongst the natural features of this landscape. The Base Camp stays in this area for up to six-month as it is very comfortable. Large twin-bedded tents are individually sited and furnished with wooden beds, coffee tables, chairs, camp-style wardrobes, wash basins and a toilet-shower extension all under a twenty six by twelve foot spread of canvas which includes two covered verandahs. Freshly prepared food is served in the dining tent and cold drinks are available. Camp lighting is subtle, electric twelve volt inside and hurricane lamps outside.

 

Tarangire Sopa

The Lodge combines spacious and comfortable guest rooms with large and impressive public areas. This luxurious safari lodge was built on a river in Tarangire National Park. It allows the visitor extensive views of the baobob tree studded landscape from each of its seventy-five ensuite rooms. Each room also contains two double beds and a private verrandah. Special events include: sundowner cocktails, safaru with a champagne breakfast served in the bush, walking safaris with Sopa's Resident Naturalist, and day and evening game drives followed by barbeque lunch or candlelight supper. Game viewing includes buffalo, baboon, zebra, giraffe, impala, kudu, mongoose, and dik dik (to name only a small few).
