Co-founder of Africa Travel Centre, Karen is an experienced travel consultant, safari researcher and developer who has worked in the safari industry since 1984. Inspired by her grandparents’ travels in Africa since the 1920s, she was drawn to the continent since childhood and started her own adventures there from a young age. Ever since, Africa has shaped her life, from career to family. Running safaris for years and calling the continent home, she was married in Zimbabwe to Brian Cockburn – a well-respected guide with an exceptional knowledge of wildlife who influenced her passion for safaris. Inspired to introduce people to Africa, together, Brian and Karen co-founded Africa Travel Centre. Through her career she has participated in every nuance and detail of planning and operating safaris. From coordinating vehicles, tents, food, and air travel, to making reservations, marketing, and guiding, she knows the industry inside and out. Her personal experiences are invaluable to creating customized trips for all types of travelers, from individuals to families. She continues to travel to Africa regularly, taking her now-grown children as often as possible.
Karen also works with a number of community-based conservation programs based on social dimensions, gender, wildlife and education. Karen is the co-founder and director of Africa Centre, Foundation for African Resources, and has organized and led groups to Zambia and Kenya for community education and health projects.
Her wealth of knowledge is supported by great attention to detail and a genuine commitment to each of her clients.
