Explore Kigali

Kigali is so much more than just a gateway to gorillas.

Politically, economically and geographically the heart of Rwanda is its capital, Kigali. Despite this, it’s often overlooked as a destination in its own right, with many visitors simply seeing the city as a jumping off point for safaris or gorilla trekking.

Those who do spend a couple of days exploring the city, however, are richly rewarded – recent development has seen Kigali shake off its sleepy image and establish itself as a vibrant and appealing destination. It’s been called Africa’s cleanest, greenest and safest capital – and there’s certainly plenty to love.

You could easily spend a few days in Kigali – and its compact nature means it’s great for shorter trips too – however 48 hours is a great length of stay in the city. This will give you time to discover many of the remarkable activities and sights to explore in Kigali, and come to appreciate the diversity and richness of its history, culture and experiences.

Get lost in Kimironko Market

It is impossible to visit Rwanda and Kigali and not be drawn in by the beautiful handicrafts and artworks made and sold locally. Skilled artisans create striking pieces that are not only beautiful, but are also reflections of centuries of cultural practice. These pieces make wonderful reminders of your trip to Kigali, as they are truly a celebration of Rwanda.

The best place to purchase these goods, such as the skilfully crafted Agaseke baskets, is the Kimironko Market. One of the biggest markets in the city, it’s a hodge-podge of stalls selling all kinds of wonderful items. Be warned – many hours have been lost to wandering the fabulous stalls, and bartering over the price is an artform in itself. It’s not to be missed.

Be dazzed by the Inema Arts Center

Art is more than just decoration – it’s an expression of self, culture and philosophy. This is particularly true in Kigali, where art has been a way to heal and express hope for the future. For this reason, art has been a huge part of reinvention for the city. Stepping into Inema Arts Center, it’s not hard to see why.

Championing local artists from Rwanda as well as other East African nations, the gallery is brimming with beautiful works from talented artists. Many are up-and-coming, and you get the sense that you may be about to stumble on a work from the next big thing in the contemporary art world. As well as the beautiful gallery, there’s also a bustling craft workshop, dance space and a lovely cafe.

Get your coffee fix

If you’re partial to a coffee (or several!), then chances are you’ve probably sampled coffee from Rwanda – you just might not have known it! The country is one of the world’s most popular coffee producers, growing and harvesting beans that are known the world over for their rich and velvety taste.

It’s no surprise, then, that Kigali offers some absolutely fabulous coffee from hangouts dotted all around the city. There are plenty to choose from, but the social enterprises are particularly ideal for a guilt-free cappuccino or espresso. Question Coffee in Remera not only makes a mean cup of coffee, but they also invest in economically disadvantaged farmers and promote environmentally sustainable practices.

Connect and learn at Nyamirambo Women's Center

From humble beginnings in 2007 to a well-respected and ever-growing social enterprise, Nyamirambo Women’s Center is a must-visit in Kigali. Started by a group of local Rwandan women committed to advancing gender equality in their home country, it has been an enormous success. Today, the Center employs over 50 women and has empowered countless more to reach financial and economic independence through its training and outreach.

Visitors have the opportunity to tour the Center and hear firsthand from the women who work there. The beautiful gift shop specialises in producing dazzling homewares, accessories and clothing; the only problem is finding enough room in your luggage for all these stunning finds! Plus, it’s not just beautiful items you’ll leave with – unique experiences such as a local cooking class or basket weaving workshop offer the opportunity to create some wonderful memories, too.

Reflect at the Kigali Genocide Museam

Although Rwanda and Kigali have built bright futures following the utterly tragic 1994 genocide, the event has left an indelible mark on the country and city. When travelling to Kigali, a visit to the Kigali Genocide Memorial is a deeply moving and informative experience. It also gives an opportunity for visitors to pay their respects to those who were, and continued to be, affected by this tragic time.

The Memorial is the final resting place of more than 250,000 victims of the inter-ethnic conflict. While it’s impossible to overlook the sadness and loss, there is also hope to be found here. The Memorial is devoted to preserving the memory of this event so that we can collectively learn from it and promote peace and understanding.

For a deeper understanding of the horrors that befell Kigali during the Rwandan Genocide, you may also wish to visit Nyamata Church about 30km south of the city. This church was home to one of the most infamous massacres of the genocide and serves as a stark and unflinching reminder of its human toll.

Take in the fresh air at Fazenda Sengha/ Mount Kigali

Rwanda is known for its abundant natural beauty, and don’t think the capital is any exception. While the heart of Kigali is bustling, just a short venture outside of its limits will see you surrounded by nature and epic views – including that of the aptly named Mount Kigali. In fact, even from within the city you’ll rarely be out of the line of sight of the 1,800 meter high peak.

While it’s enjoyable to simply hike up Mount Kigali, passing charming villages before eventually reaching the top, there’s even more to love here. Atop the mountain you’ll find Fazenda Sengha, a recreation center offering a fabulous array of activities. From simply grabbing a drink and enjoying the views and serenity, to horse riding through the surrounding forest, it’s a wonderful way to spend a morning or afternoon.

Get Milk!

Some of the city’s most unmissable foodie experiences are its most unpretentious. There’s the iconic Rwandan milk bars that serve (you guessed it!) milk – and not much else. These are unique and found nowhere else outside of Rwanda, so it’s an unmissable experience. Some of the city’s most unmissable foodie experiences are its most unpretentious. A humble glass of full-fat milk is a staple, or you may like to try the fermented ikivuguto if you are feeling brave. You’ll almost certainly be surrounded by locals; milk is a favorite across Rwanda, and the many milk bars are to Rwanda like pubs are to England. More than a place to indulge in your favorite beverage, they’re also a meeting place and community living room

Go on a gastronomic journey

Food and culture go hand-in-hand, and you can learn a lot about a place from its gastronomy. Kigali is no exception, and in the city you’ll find a fascinating (and scrumptious) array of things to try. Indeed, every meal is an experience of itself.

Kigali boasts a bustling cafe scene, with many offering laidback, outdoor dining – the perfect way to whittle away an hour or so. There is also a selection of upmarket restaurants, many offering cuisine that blends traditional East African flavours with a hearty Belgian influence.

One thing is for sure; you'll leave Kigali with a full stomach, heart and mind.
