Cape Town

One of the world’s most engaging cities, Cape Town has a truly sensational setting, sandwiched between imperious Table Mountain and the depths of the Atlantic. An agreeable Mediterranean climate makes it a haven for outdoor enthusiasts, yet as the oldest city in South Africa, it also has a rich cultural life and pervasive sense of history. Serviced by South Africa’s second-busiest international airport, Cape Town is the gateway to the Cape Winelands and Hermanus, and a useful springboard for road trips to the Garden Route and Eastern Cape.

Discover Cape Town

Cape Town is renowned for its fun cocktail of trendy restaurants, chilled cafes, all-night bars, quirky shops and boutique hotels. It all comes together at the Victoria & Albert Waterfront, an outdoorsy harborfront mall where seals frolic below the imposing outline of Table Mountain.

The city center hosts a wealth of imposing colonial edifices and contemporary museums. These range from the hexagonal Castle of Good Hope, which is the oldest extant building in South Africa, constructed over 1666-79, to the poignant District Six Museum, which documents the forced removal of 60,000 ‘non-whites’ from the eponymous suburb by the apartheid authorities.

The Cape Peninsula is studded with lovely beaches. There’s something for everyone, whether your thing is surfing, swimming, sunbathing, socializing or scenic seaside strolls.

South Africa’s answer to Alcatraz, Robben Island is where Nelson Mandela and many other prominent activists were imprisoned during apartheid. A UNESCO World Heritage Site, the island today functions as a museum, 30 minutes’ ferry ride away from the Victoria & Albert Waterfront.

Table Mountain is South Africa’s most famous natural landmark, its distinctive flat top towering 3,000 foot above the city bowl. The easiest way to reach the summit is a cableway that first opened in 1929, but you can also hike up via Platteklip Gorge. Either way, the views in every direction are stunning.

The patchwork Table Mountain National Park protects most non-urbanized parts of the Cape Peninsula and offers limitless scope for hiking and other outdoor activities. Highlights include an endearing African penguin colony at Boulders Beach, and the dramatic end-of-the-continent cliffscapes of windswept Cape Point.
