Cape Winelands
The mountains and valleys immediately inland of Cape Town form the traditional center of South Africa’s prodigious viniculture industry. Wine-tasting tours are the most popular activity in this scenic region of neat vineyards set below craggy mountains and sunny African skies, but it also hosts several historic towns, many fine examples of traditional Cape Dutch architecture, and a world-class culinary scene.
Discover the Cape Winelands
Most wine estates offer free or inexpensive tasting facilities and it can be tremendous fun to spend a day exploring a few of them (ideally on an organized ‘wine tour’, so you don’t need to worry about driving). Everybody has their favorites, but Boschendal (founded 1685), Lanzarac (1692) and Vergelegen (1700) take some beating when it comes to a combination of graceful natural setting, period architecture, and superb wining and dining, while family-friendly Spier offers a range of activities suited to children.
Founded in 1679, Stellenbosch – ipso facto capital of the Winelands – is South Africa’s second-oldest and arguably most characterful town. Nicknamed Eikestad (Town of Oaks), the pedestrian-friendly old center retains a time-warped Cape Dutch architectural feel whilst also hosting the sort of contemporary café scene and nightlife one might expect of a long-standing university town.
The Cape Winelands is renowned for its fine dining and imaginative cuisine, typically fusing traditional Cape Malay elements with a cosmopolitan array of outside influences. South Africa’s acknowledged foodie nirvana is the tiny Winelands town of Franschhoek, which routinely accounts for half-a-dozen entries in lists of the country’s top 100 restaurants.
