Situated on the Lake Victoria shore a short distance south of the capital Kampala, Entebbe has long been home to Uganda’s only international airport. There is, however, far more to this small leafy town than merely an air gateway for safaris to the rest of Uganda, notably several superb birding and primate-viewing opportunities.
A lovely lakeshore botanical garden within walking distance of the town center shelters semi-habituated troops of vervet monkey and black-and-white colobus, and a rich birdlife including palmnut vulture, African fish eagle, great blue turaco, African grey parrot and black-and-white casqued hornbill.
The highly-regarded Uganda Wildlife Education Centre provides refuge to several rare and threatened animals, including chimps, lions and reintroduced black rhino, in large enclosures.
Dating back to the colonial era, the 18-hole Entebbe Golf Course has an attractive tropical location sloping down towards Lake Victoria. Visitors are welcome to drop in for a round.
Ngamba Island Chimpanzee Sanctuary lies an hour’s motorboat ride from Entebbe and can be visited on a day tour or as an overnight trip. An affiliate of the Jane Goodall Institute, it is home to 49 orphaned chimpanzees, which range freely in a large fenced-off area of forest overlooked by an elevated viewing platform.
A community-based ecotourism project at bird-rich Mabamba Swamp, to the west of Entebbe, offers wonderfully unpretentious dugout canoe excursions guided by local boatmen. The avian star among Mabamba’s 300 recorded species is the shoebill, which the guides can usually locate within 30 minutes. Other specials include African pygmy goose, gull-billed tern and papyrus gonolek.
