Gonarezhou

Although Zimbabwe’s second largest national park, Gonarezhou has long slipped under the radar due to its remote location in the far southeast. Interestingly though, that’s about to change.

‘Gonu’, as we affectionately call it, is an up-in-comer in the safari world, quickly attracting those looking to get ahead of the crowds. Yes, it’s a little tougher to reach than other parks, but it’s well worth the effort if you want an experience that’s incomparable to where you’ve already been.

Its tumbled, rugged landscape gives it plenty of character. Just picture it: Endless spreads of combretum shrubbery and mopane woodland. Two bountiful rivers (the Runde and Save) and the rusty red sandstone cliffs of Chilojo. This faultless combination supports a medley of wildlife — its vast interior creates a wonderful pantry of plains game for local predators.

Gonarezhou, meaning ‘place of many elephants’, highlights its resident herds of big tuskers, but there’s plenty to see as animal densities continue to replenish after its tumultuous poaching history. Current data records over 50 fish species, 450 bird species, and 150 mammal species here.

With conservation efforts alive and well, it’s easy to see why Gonarezhou is stepping into the safari spotlight. A visit here also supports a well-organised pangolin project focusing on the release and ongoing monitoring of this highly endangered mammal.

Although mobile camps are popular here, Chilo Gorge Safari Lodge is an excellent choice with its permanent view over the Save River.
