MZ - Gorongosa National Park

Gorongosa National Park

Mozambique’s flagship safari destination, Gorongosa National Park extends across 2,000 square miles of mixed woodland and seasonal wetlands at the base of Mount Gorongosa, an isolated massif that rises almost a mile above the surrounding plains. Back in its heyday, Gorongosa’s wildlife densities rivalled those of the Serengeti. Unfortunately, the park suffered from intensive poaching during the 1970s and 80s, but animal numbers are now gradually recovering as the result of an ongoing rehabilitation program initiated by the Carr Foundation in 2004.

Discover Gorongosa National Park

The park is home to four of the Big Five, the exception being rhino. Elephant, lion and buffalo are quite likely to be encountered over the course of a safari, but you’d be fortunate indeed to glimpse a leopard.

Other species that might be seen on the main wildlife-viewing circuit include zebra, hippo, warthog, waterbuck, impala, bushbuck, reedbuck, nyala and sable antelope. A pack of endangered African wild dog was reintroduced in 2018.

Gorongosa supports more than 500 bird species. Woodland specials include sooty falcon, Dickinson’s kestrel, racket-tailed roller and broad-tailed paradise whydah, while the floodplains often host large numbers of storks, cranes, pelicans, herons and other aquatic species.

Incorporated into the national park in 2010, Mount Gorongosa offers some fantastic hiking opportunities and its forests are renowned among birdwatchers for hosting the only Southern African population of the beautiful green-headed oriole.
