Zimbabwe’s premier safari destination, Hwange extends across 5,657 square miles of pristine African bush, an hour or two’s drive south of Victoria Falls. This vast park is renowned for its diversity of mammals, with more than 100 species present, including all the Big Five. It is also a key component of the unfenced 200,000-square-mile Kavango–Zambezi Transfrontier Conservation Area, and its wildlife ranges freely across the border into Botswana’s Chobe and Okavango regions.
Discover Hwange National Park
Hwange is famed above all for its dense population of elephants. Numbers might peak at 75,000 in the dry season, when hundred-strong herds are frequently encountered, but they drop during the rains, when some of the herds disperse into Botswana or further afield.
Carnivores are very well represented and quite easily seen. Lion, spotted hyena and black-backed jackal are most conspicuous, but lucky visitors might also see cheetah, leopard. African hunting dog, and various smaller nocturnal carnivores.
Common ungulates include buffalo, giraffe, zebra, wildebeest and various antelope. Hwange is a good place to see the localized sable antelope and massive eland. Black and white rhino are both present but scarce and seldom encountered.
The bird checklist of 400-plus species is particularly strong on raptors (more than 50 species) and large ground birds such as ostrich, southern ground hornbill, and Kori bustard.
The developed part of Hwange around Main Camp is well-suited to self-drive and budget safaris, thanks to the ease of access from Victoria Falls, good amenities, and a decent network of internal roads. Several of the waterholes around Main Camp are worth spending time at; none more so than Nyamandhlovu with its wonderful viewing platform.
