As one of the oldest national parks on the continent and the largest in Zimbabwe, it’s safe to say that Hwange National Park has earned its rightful place in the hearts of diehard safari-goers. Located northwest of the country, close to the Kalahari desert, it’s easily accessible just off the main road between Bulawayo and Victoria Falls.

Aside from those mega-herds of elephants seen plodding along those mopane-dotted plains, a defining feature of Hwange is its network of independent water pans. Unlike the Okavango Delta, water is sparse here, particularly in the dry season (from April – September), when you’re guaranteed to witness some of the most thrilling animal interactions. Blink, and you might just miss a cheetah sighting. Roan, sable also tops the list of desirable sightings, along with Africa’s painted pooches – wild dogs.

Evening game drives through the wilds of Hwange are pure magic.  From leopards on the prowl to cackling packs of hyenas scouting for leftovers. If you love the idea of stretching out your legs on a walking safari – this is just the place to lace up your safari shoes.
