Ilha de Mozambique

The oldest European settlement on the east coast of Africa, Ilha de Moçambique occupies a narrow two-mile-long island offshore of northern Mozambique. It effectively served as Portugal’s East African capital from 1530 until 1898, when it was superseded by Maputo, and is now inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Despite being connected to the mainland by a motorable causeway, the old town retains an appealing time-warped character and houses some of the oldest surviving buildings in sub-equatorial Africa.

The island’s northern tip is dominated by the Fortaleza de São Sebastião, an imposing fortress built with dressed limestone shipped from Lisbon between 1546 and 1583. Set within its towering ramparts, the Capela da Nossa Senhora do Baluarte is a small church built in 1522, making it the oldest standing European building in the southern hemisphere.

Erected as a Jesuit College in 1619 and subsequently the governor’s residence, the São Paulo Palace Museum incorporates the original 17th-century chapel and several rooms whose décor is practically unchanged since the governorship relocated to Maputo in 1898.

Pride of place among the island’s many other centuries-old edifices goes to the Fortim de São Lourenço, perched on a tiny mushroom-shaped coral outcrop that you can walk out to at low tide.

Historic landmarks aside, the narrow alleys of Ilha de Moçambique retain a unique atmosphere determined by the juxtaposition of the overtly Portuguese architectural landscape against an African/Muslim feel reminiscent of old Swahili ports such as Lamu or Zanzibar.

Following decades of neglect, many of the town’s older residential buildings have been renovated as characterful owner-managed boutique hotels, backpackers or seafood restaurants.
