Inhambane

One of southern Mozambique’s oldest and most characterful towns, Inhambane stands on an attractive natural harbor chosen as the site of Africa’s first Jesuit mission in 1560. Today, the town is best known as the road gateway to the seaside resort villages of Tofo and Tofinho, which stand on the fine sand of the Barra Peninsula a few miles to the east.

Discover Inhambane

Inhambane is a pleasant town to stroll around. Attractive 19th-century architectural relicts include the Church of Our Lady of Conception, a restored mosque, the ostentatious Hoffman House, and the enigmatic House of Arches with its internal spiral staircase. Don’t miss the bustling central market or the spectacular sunsets that grace the west-facing harborfront.

Easy-going Tofo and Tofinho sprawl for several miles along a wide sandy beach popular with swimmers, surfers and anglers alike. Accommodation here caters to all tastes and budgets, and there are innumerable individualistic restaurants, beach bars and nightlife venues.

The most popular offshore diving site is Manta Reef, which is reliably good for manta rays, whale sharks, barracudas and various small colorful reef fish.

Aimed mainly at non-divers, popular ocean safaris leave daily in search of manta rays, whale sharks, dolphins and other outsized marine creatures.

Other popular activities include horseback safaris through the coconut groves and water sports such as windsurfing, kitesurfing and kayaking.

At the northern tip of the Barra Peninsula, flanked by gorgeous isolated beaches, the 43ft high Punta da Barra Lighthouse is a striking conical construction built sometime between 1873 and 1904.
