A highlight of southwest Madagascar’s semi-arid interior, the 314-square-mile Parc National d’Isalo protects a vast sandstone massif that rises to above 4,000ft from the surrounding grassland. Isalo is best known for its evocative rockscapes – spine-like rows of jagged peaks, eroded strata, and precarious-looking balancing rocks – but it also harbors a wealth of endemic flora and fauna, including seven lemur and 83 bird species.

Discover Parc National d’Isalo

The most popular guided day trail is a 7-mile circular hike that leads to an oasis-like natural swimming pool surrounded by palms and set at the base of the massif. The gorgeous Verreaux’s sifaka and charismatic ring-tailed lemur are commonly seen on this hike.  Isalo is  also famed for its bizarre succulent flora, which includes the bulbous elephant’s foot plant Pachypodium rosulatum and the exquisite red-flowering Aloe isaloensis.

Easily reached from the main road through the national park, La Fenêtre de l’Isalo (Window of Isalo) is a stunning elevated rock arch that offers great opportunities for landscape photography.

The park supports a good range of dry-country birds, and one local special in the form of Benson’s rock thrush, a conspicuous subspecies of forest rock-thrush endemic to Isalo and environs.

Wildlife enthusiasts heading on to Ifaty-Mangily should stop at Parc National de Zombitse-Vohibasia, which protects an isolated 1.4-square-mile pocket of transitional moist-spiny forest. Tiny it might be, but this park still supports an astonishing 98 bird species, including several ‘spiny desert specials’, and the very localized Appert’s tetraka. Lemurs and chameleons are also usually seen on guided walks.
