Plunging just over 360 feet into the Batoka Gorge below, it’s easy to see why Victoria Falls remains one of the most visited attractions in Africa. While both Zambia and Zimbabwe offer spectacular views of this iconic waterfall, the debate continues as to which side captures her best angles. Some say Zim, but we say try a balance of both!

Also known as Mosi-oa Tunya in Sotho, which translates into the ‘smoke that thunders’, her impressive spray can be seen from 160 feet away – but that’s if you time your visit just right. Since water levels fluctuate between seasons, it’s important to plan carefully should you like to witness her roaring zenith. Be it getting up close on foot or seeing her from the heavens on a helicopter flight, there are many ways to appreciate Victoria Falls. If you’re planning a return trip, try to time your visit during the full moon when you can experience a ‘lunar rainbow’ or ‘moonbow’ within the spray. 

Ultimately, what we love most about Victoria Falls is how generous this destination is in the way of activities and how it attracts all levels of Tom Cruise madness. From white river rafting to bungee jumping, bike tours, sunset safari cruises and daring dips in Devil’s Pool, it’s up to you how far you want to push it. 

It’s worth noting that Victoria Falls is also the name of the small town located on the Zimbabwean side of the Zambezi River. A lot has changed here over the years, so if the last time you saw it was during the guidebook heyday, it’s worth going back.
