Situated on the border with Zambia, Victoria Falls, located in Zimbabwe is arguably the most phenomenal geographic landmark anywhere in Africa. Listed by National Geographic as one of the seven wonders of the natural world, this breathtaking waterfall is all the more impressive for its setting on a jungle-lined stretch of the Zambezi River where the likes of hippo and elephant roam wild. On the Zimbabwean side, the small but well-equipped town of Victoria Falls offers a great selection of hotels, along with adventure activities such as bungee jumps and white-water rafting in the deep gorge below the waterfall.
Reasons to visit Victoria Falls
The world’s largest single sheet of falling water, the mile-wide, 350ft-high Victoria Falls kicks up a tall plume of spray alluded to in its local name Mosi-oa-Tunya (Smoke that Thunders). It can be seen from any number of viewpoints, but the best full-frontal is offered from the small spray-doused Victoria Falls Rainforest National Park, a short walk from the town of Victoria Falls.
A 15-minute walk north of town leads to the Big Tree, a massive riverside baobab that marks a camping site used by some of the earliest European traders to the region. Elephant, buffalo and various antelope might be seen on the walk out, which also offers excellent birding.
One of the world’s highest and most spectacular bungee jumps launches from the road bridge connecting the Zimbabwean and Zambian sides of Victoria Falls. Other activities suited to those with strong hearts and a head for heights include abseiling, high-wiring and a gorge swing.
Whitewater rafting trips in the Zambezi Gorge below Victoria Falls run a series of thrilling Grade IV-V rapids with names like Boiling Pot, Oblivion and Gnashing Jaws of Death. And if that doesn’t get your adrenaline flowing, river-boarding and white-water kayaking are also available.
Hippos, crocodiles and a wide variety of tropical birds can be seen on guided canoe trips on the wide, jungle-fringed stretch of the Zambezi above Victoria Falls.
